Case Study: Agile Enterprise Architecture Management

Through a comprehensive assessment with all stakeholder groups, individual concept development, the implementation of our best practices and the introduction of a continuous process including an EAM initiative, a future-proof enterprise architecture was created that is based on clear architectural principles and secured by a governance framework.

The challenge for our client

Industry: Automotive

An automotive manufacturer is having difficulty managing and aligning its enterprise architecture, which was first introduced three years ago in the form of a pilot project. In addition to entrenched storage, new architectural ideas and concepts are often rejected across teams. The implementation speed of new products is becoming slower and slower due to increasing complexity. Decisions are primarily made from the ivory tower. Enterprise and software architects are overburdened due to unclearly defined roles and, thanks to increased involvement, above all overworked.

The existing enterprise architecture is inconsistent and redundant due to multiple monoliths and dependencies on legacy systems, making it increasingly expensive. Modernization and innovation of legacy systems and processes is necessary and part of Strategy 2023. There is a lack of clearly defined, explained and documented architecture principles for design and alignment. Also, the architecture is not in line with the business strategy, resulting in a lack of clarity and orientation in the decision-making process at the management level.

NIJON

In order to create a future-proof and competitive enterprise architecture, a customized approach must be taken that combines and harmonizes the various aspects of an enterprise, such as business processes, information technology, data and application infrastructure.

Our solution

To overcome these challenges, we first conducted a detailed assessment with all stakeholder groups. Based on this, we developed an individual and holistic concept with a focus on the analysis and development of clear architecture principles as well as the introduction of a continuous process including an EAM initiative. With the help of the definition of architecture principles, a framework was created for the development and implementation of the future enterprise architecture. The principles were aligned with the business strategy and, together with architecture circles, ensured that they were continuously and effectively communicated and understood throughout the organization. In addition, an architecture governance framework was built to ensure compliance with the architecture principles. The standards ensured consistency and quality throughout the organization.

Benefits for the client

The holistic approach provided transparency about the enterprise architecture. With the help of the development of clear architecture principles, it was ensured that the future enterprise architecture was in line with the business strategy, providing clarity and orientation in the decision-making process. The introduction of architecture standards also increased consistency and quality across the enterprise and reduced redundancies and inconsistencies. Necessary legacy systems can now be modernized or replaced piece by piece. Redundant in-house developments are decapsulated and shut down. As a result, systems can be further developed more quickly and development costs can be reduced.
